It is not necessary, per se, to understand astrology to practice the Craft of the Wise. But it helps indirectly in various ways to know its basic cosmology and symbolism. It informs the symbols and meanings of our Sabbats. It can be used as a means of answering divinatory questions, from finding lost objects and people, to predicting the course of relationships, to determining the causes of illness in the body (within reason, if one is not a medical doctor), to predicting elections, sporting events, and the outcomes of civil and criminal litigation. It can show us how an individual, too, or even a dynasty or country, fits within the Great Pattern. It also keeps us grounded in the structure of reality. As Witches, we are sometimes called upon by the Gods to be the instruments of shaping reality in certain directions through our spells and magical workings. If we do not face the reality of something as it actually is, we are unlikely to be able to shape that reality successfully into something else.
In this posting, I again look at astrology's marvelous divinatory form. For some predictions, one does not have to wait very long to see if one is correct. A sporting event, for instance. Or finding a lost object. Or picking the day when a package will arrive in the mail, or determining when a friend will call you next. Or predicting if the Seeker will get a certain job he has applied for. Apprentice astrologers practice on such things regularly and can get immediate satisfaction. I, myself, have twice predicted the day when the Seeker would receive a job offer, and I sat in the Seeker's office as the telephone call came. Very gratifying indeed!
But some predictions are slower coming to fruition, and this chart is an example. One of the benefits to practicing astrology for a long time is seeing even one's long term predictions come to pass. And if you receive personal instruction in the art--a lineage of sorts--amazing charts and predictions get passed down from teacher to student. This is such a chart, more than worthy of being used to instruct others.
FACTS: The Seeker was a woman in her mid-20s. She was not dating anyone at the time of the question. She asked:
Will I ever get married? If so, when?
How or where will we meet?
What does he look like?
What does he do for a living?
Will I be happy in the marriage?
The only other note I would add to the chart above is that the Part of Marriage is at 15 Gemini 11, making Mercury the dispositor or symbol of the marriage, itself.
I will not go through the entire process of judgment (which took me 4 1/2 pages when writing it out), but this was my answer to the Seeker:
JUDGMENT: Yes, you will get married, in a bit less than 5 years from the time of the question. Both of you are not yet living in the city where you will meet, so you will both move to a common city in the future. You will meet at an evening class, library, church, on holiday, or through a dating service. His build will be muscular but wiry, with thick dark hair and a darker complexion. You will be quite magnetically attracted to his masculine charms. He has a visible scar on one foot. He will be mainly interested in himself and his own needs, although he will be concerned about your womanhood and fertility. As for job, he will likely be in the finance industry such as a stocks or commodities broker, but other possibilities are working with chemistry, or even a cook or a baker. The marriage will not be a particularly happy one, and emotionally turbulent for you at times. Although it will last, there will be talk of divorce, but both of you will want to avoid it. He is currently, i.e., at the time of the question, having a romantic affair with a friend. Don't get jealous about this! You haven't met him yet, after all.
RESULT: The Seeker married in March 2012, just shy of 5 years. He was an Indian man raised in London. They met in Washington DC after both of them moved there for work. He is tall, lean, dark-haired, and dark complected. He is very good looking with a soccer player's lean musculature. When he was a child, he broke one of his baby toes on one of his feet, and it never set right, so it juts out from his foot. He had a career as a commodities broker, but left that in London, moved to DC, and was working at a nonprofit company. As they were dating, he insisted that he try to get her pregnant, as he wanted children and he wanted to make sure they were fertile together. The last I knew, they had two daughters. The Seeker told me that she was extremely attracted to him when they met, and that he is a rather self-centered person.
Although not 100% accurate (visible scar on foot versus jutting toe), it is more than sufficient to constitute a prediction fulfilled. Keep in mind, too, that traditional astrology is a rule-based discipline. Every thing I concluded can be easily justified from the chart. NO CLAIRVOYANCE ALLOWED. Your teacher would rap your knuckles with a ruler if you dared try to slip in psychic perception. The art must be guarded from nonrepeatable assertions, and its only guardians are those who teach and practice it.
We don't need psychic perception for astrology, anyway. The Goddess Above, the Queen of Heaven, already speaks plainly enough, if you will learn Her movements and language:
