I gave a two-hour lesson on Tarot this weekend. It mainly concerned the mechanics of reading, and was not focused on meanings. The more experienced I get, the firmer I become in the belief that card reading is mostly an inborn thing. If you were born on earth and get some basic instruction on how the cards must be interpreted in the framework of cosmology, you can read cards. The language of the universe is not particularly difficult to learn, but you must learn it if you want it to communicate to you. The universe will not learn your language and quirks, it should perhaps go without saying. Moreover, a Tarot deck, and even a regular card deck, is something like a Book of Life and Time. So it should be allowed to express that as cleanly as possible. A Marseille deck is good. As is a regular playing card deck. A Rider Waite deck is not good because the images on the Minor Arcana are often at odds with the Universal language. Anyway, so much for meanings.

One thing I advise people to do when reading for others is to try to tell the Querent some minor thing that has just happened to the Querent. Immediately give an event -- something you could not possibly know except for the cards -- in order to instill confidence in the Querent of your abilities. This is usually easy for me because my favorite spread is an unstructured 21-card Gypsy Spread -- 3 rows of 7 cards each. Something usually pops up at the beginning of the spread that you can mention.

The Empress, 5 of Pentacles, 9 of Swords, 3 of Cups

Above, for instance, I was reading for a woman in her 40s. She had a friend tag along because the friend was visiting her from out-of-state. I laid out 21 cards (a Marseille deck, which is not the deck picture above), and saw these four together at the beginning of the spread. I said: "I see that you are planning to renovate your kitchen. Do it. It will go smoothly without any problems or delays." She gasped and turned to her friend, who exclaimed: "We were just talking about that this morning!" Nothing earth-shattering, but it helps to indicate to the Querent that you are not a fake.

I think it is reasonable for a Querent to ask a diviner about something that has recently happened. If the reader says something like, "That's not what Tarot is for," one would be entirely justified in getting up and walking out. Tarot is absolutely for the telling of events --- past, present, and future. It can be for other things, too -- clarifying one's emotional state, exploring possible options in making a decision, and so on. If a reader says, however, that Tarot is not for the telling of events, there is something seriously amiss in the reader's training.

I cannot emphasize it enough . . . the Universe will speak clearly to you if you learn its language. Initially, this requires humility and ignorance. They are easy possessions, but virtue seldom gets willing heirs.

A couple other clear examples:

Empress, 9 of Swords, Ace of Cups, 7 of Swords: A break-in of a residence, and the beginning of a police investigation.

Knight of Swords, Chariot, 4 of Swords: A speeding ticket.

King of Wands, 9 of Cups, 3 of Swords, Moon: The Querent's grandfather is not feeling well. He has high blood pressure and takes medication for it. The medication is off in dosage and causing his problems. The grandfather needs to go to the doctor to have the medication adjusted.

Ace of Cups, 6 of Swords, 10 of Cups, 9 of Swords: Something will go wrong with the Querent's water pipes, and the house will be without water. I told her to stock up on jugs of water. The Querent literally scoffed at me and assured me that it could not be true. The house had just been built within the year, and it had been inspected 6 months before, when she and her family purchased it. She called me a week later and told me that the water main supplying the neighborhood had burst.

So, that one was true, as were all the others.

In a future entry, I will write about methods of divination in which the Querent says nothing. The reader must tell the Querent the question, and then answer the question. That can be done in horary astrology, horary numerology, geomancy, and in the sangoma bone-reading tradition.

So Says the Horned Father

My first Tarot deck ever was a Marseille Tarot, which I loved. Within a couple of years, I had been seduced to the Rider Waite Tarot, although something about the images on the Minor Arcana cards bothered me, for some reason I could not then articulate.

Later, however, I cast the Rider-Waite aside, when I learned that none of the Wise, whom I later met, ever used it. And they taught me the distinction between the old style deck and the new one. And then they taught me that I could read the old style deck like a book. In fact, I could read the world like a book. In fact, I was learning what some Witches call "True Speech."

As my mind grew accustomed the idea, I found that it was so. I could spread out 21 cards and read the Seeker's world. If I had only a brief question, I could draw fewer cards and get a sentence as an answer. I learned that the World and the Holy Powers could and would speak to me, if only I submitted to their language, in humility.

I once asked the Horned Father a question on a certain topic, and combed out the above cards. This was His answer:

"My child [He always calls me that], let the Sons of Darkness dig their own graves."

Word.

He was telling me to mind my own business and to not get caught up in the situation facing me.

*** Blessed be to those who serve the Great Mother and the Horned Father.

A Reading Six Weeks Ago
Facsimile Playing Card Deck, American, 1860s

It would have been very uncommon before the 20th century for most Witches to own a pack of Tarot cards. Divination by regular playing cards was much more common. If a Witch owned a Tarot before the 20th century, it would have been an old-style deck without pictures on the Minor Arcana cards. That was just as well, of course. With playing card decks or old-style Tarot decks, one is literally reading an orderly microcosm, or "world in miniature." More modern decks with specific scenes on the Minor Arcana cards work, too, although they can be somewhat confining to a Witch's power to perceive the future and predict specific events, particularly if the Seeker has no specific question.

That often happens. A person comes for a reading and has no question other than wanting to know what is coming up in the future. It is easier to predict specific events by "reading the world in miniature" than trying to link together and interpret varied images and come up with specific events.

Here is an example, using my family's card-telling interpretations. The above spread is known as The Fateful Square, and the 16 cards (plus 3 "surprise" cards) are chosen by a specific method too detailed to outline here. Predicted events will usually come to pass within 4-6 weeks.

The Seeker was the King of Hearts. He had no specific question, but just wanted to know what was coming up in his future. I told him. Let's count the predictions:

1. A friendly woman from your past, with whom you have not spoken in a long time, has experienced some kind of sudden trouble or dismay, and she is going to reach out to you by text or telephone for advice (Knave of Spades, Knave of Hearts, Queen of Hearts, 2 of Diamonds): The double Knaves show the suddenness. The Knave of Spades falling first shows the trouble or dismay. A Knave and a Queen of the same suit next to each other means an old friend coming back: "A Queen and a Jack brings an old friend back" runs the Witches' proverb. The 2 of Diamonds shows the telephone call or message.

2. You will have an argument with a woman who is ill-disposed to you. You will know she is lying. But you will also know that it is a trifling matter. Do not resist her. Agree with her and let her think that she has won in order to keep the peace (Queen of Spades, 2 of Spades, 3 of Diamonds, 8 of Hearts): The Queen of Spades is a woman ill-disposed toward the Seeker. Followed by another Spade, she is a liar. Here, the situation may be even worse because she is bounded by both the 2 of Diamonds and 2 of Spades -- a definite omen of conscious duplicity or falsity. The nonserious nature of the matter is shown by the 3 of Diamonds, and keeping the peace by the 8 of Hearts. This woman is trying to bait the Seeker into overreacting.

3. The most prominent thing for you in the near future is that an electrical or wiring problem is emerging in your residence. It will cause no fire or damage, but you will need to call someone to have it dealt with (3 of Clubs, 7 of Clubs, Ace of Hearts, 8 of Diamonds, Ace of Clubs, King of Hearts, 3 of Spades, 4 of Diamonds): The 3 of Clubs and 7 of Clubs together show a practical problem developing, and the Ace of Hearts and 8 of Diamonds show electrical wiring in the house. The Ace of Clubs and King of Hearts show the Seeker seeking help, and the 3 of Spades and 4 of Diamonds show expenditure of funds. The 3 of Spades can indicate loss or expense. The 4 of Diamonds can be a wallet, bank account, check, or credit card. There are certain combinations of cards that appear to show damage or fire, and they do not appear here. Therefore, this is a not a physically threatening situation.

4. Be careful of leaving your wallet or a credit card at a bar or restaurant. You will retrieve it, but it will be an annoyance (King of Hearts, 3 of Spades, 4 of Diamonds, 5 of Diamonds): I have seen the 3 of Spades and 4 of Diamonds combination so often that I know what it means. The 5 of Diamonds has to do with material things for the body -- food, clothing, etc. -- and it can symbolize a restaurant.

5. Note: The Surprise (5 of Diamonds, 6 of Hearts, 9 of Hearts): I do not know why the old card tellers call a certain grouping of cards a "surprise," but they do. Oftentimes, it is just another prediction, and not all that surprising. Meaning here: You have been meaning to purchase new clothes for work. You will do so this month, going out shopping, and not on-line. You will be extremely happy about what you find and buy: The clothes will be for work because the King of Hearts is next to the Ace of Clubs (duty, work). The 3 of Spades and 4 of Diamonds show the expenditure of money. The 5 of Diamonds shows clothing and, next to the 6 of Hearts, an enjoyable shopping trip. The 9 of Hearts shows the Seeker's wish being fulfilled, so this shopping for clothes has been on his mind for a while.

There you have it. A Fateful Square giving five detailed predictions.

According to the Seeker, all of them came to pass within six weeks.

*** Blessed be to those who serve the Great Mother and the Horned Father.

Tarot Reading from July 2021

As a Witch, I favor divination with specific information and concrete predictions. I am not a therapist, life coach, counselor, or substitute friend. If you come to me for a reading, I will not tell you how you presently feel, but what has been, what is, and what will be.

This gentleman just wanted a general peek at his future at the beginning of July 2021. A peek? That's five cards to me.

I find the older decks without distracting minor arcana pictures to provide a wider scope of interpretation. Reading something like the Rider Waite is too much like crystal gazing preset images.

Here, we have the Tower, the 8 of Wands, the 5 of Wands, the Hanged Man, and the Six of Swords.

My brief reading: You have gone through a turbulent time recently, with great upheaval focused at work owing to layoffs and terminations. Your are working extremely hard, sacrificing yourself for your job or company. With what time you take for yourself, you are engaging in yoga exercise (Hanged Man + 5 of Wands is a combination for yoga for fitness or exercise). It is very foolish for you to be sacrificing yourself like this as you will soon be leaving your job, either of your own accord or by termination.

All true. As for the predication, that was also true: he was terminated from his position by the end of the month.

*** Blessed be to those who serve the Great Mother and the Horned Father.
