The Heroes

Nov. 20th, 2023 01:25 pm
As part of the lecture on the Theory of Dark Magic, I talked about a type of dark magic that involves invoking The Heroes of one's country in defense of one's country. This is a strong current of magic amongst old Witches in England---*very rarely* used, but *always* preserved and passed from one generation to the next---and it is from my old Witch Mother in England that I first learned about it. This type of magic---invoking the Past Heroes of one's land to defend against an invasion---is not bad or evil, but it is very heavy in its energies, and that is why it is usually classed with more advanced types of magic.

There are few covens in the United States that work with The Heroes. If one were going to, the first thing you would do is come up with a list. You needn't go for the obvious of people who were high generals or brave soldiers, but we are talking about invasion and bombs and bloodshed, so you would need to pick people with some grit, martial understanding, and reliability. During the lecture, I made the point that Susan B. Anthony was a manifold blessing to this country. Although she had grit and reliability and sound principles, she does not spring to mind when I think of martial understanding and the preservation of life. For that reason, I would not put her on my list. By way of contrast, I said that Stagecoach Mary (Mary Fields) definitely made my list.

Here's her biography. And a photo of her below.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Fields

Blessed be, Stagecoach Mary, one of the Mighty Ones of this country.
Yesterday's lecture was, for such a dark topic, enjoyable . . . mostly because I tried to add some levity to it.

Here was the first page of the lecture.

There was a second packet of spells.

Because I will be giving a lecture on the topic this weekend, I have been thinking quite a bit about dark magic and other magic that is grayish or dark grayish. I thought about commanding spells, which essentially allows one person to take over, influence, and/or control an individual or group mind. Dark magic? It could be. It might not be, though. I think it would depend on why the control was necessary. A profit motive doesn't seem a good enough reason to me. But what about taking control of a public budget meeting to get a sidewalk or road repaired in a neighborhood where many elderly people live? Or taking control of a budget meeting to get law enforcement resources allocated to breaking up a dog-fighting or cock-fighting ring? Those are probably closer issues.

I've done a couple of these types of commanding spells in the past for specific people. A very effective and very easy traditional one involves placing nine thin Devil Sticks in a vial and covering them with whiskey. Two things to be cautious about here . . . there are several plants that go by the name, and you have to be careful to use the right one. Otherwise, forget it. Second, after the vial has been put together, it must be (a) charmed in a specific way, and (b) solely in the name of the person who is to use it.

After the spell vial is done, though, the person for whom it is made can easily take control of any meeting. Before the meeting, he must take out one of the sticks and rub it between his hands for 20-30 seconds. He must then replace the stick in the vial. He must then go to the meeting as early as possible so that, when people enter, he can shake their hands, in a friendly or professional way, depending on the person or context. He must shake the hands of as many participants (or decision-makers) as he can, with half as a minimum. If he does this, his confidence and the bewitched elixir on his hands will allow him to get everything that he wants and needs from the meeting.

Whether you allow the person to keep the vial after that for repeated uses is up to you. Don't trust him? Confiscate it, then, after he is done using it.

I doubt they would win any awards, but they might be a good memory aid.

A missing persons case will occasionally come to my notice. Within an hour of being alerted to this one, I had cast the above chart and knew the story.

The missing person here is symbolized by Lord 7 inasmuch as the person was unknown to me. So, it is the Moon. The Moon is also the natural ruler of missing persons, but we don't need to rely on a natural rulership here.

One can see that the Moon recently crossed from an Air sign (say, 29 Aquarius) into a Water sign (say 1 Pisces), and as it did so, it immediately hit the Sun, Lord 8, by antiscion, and then immediately hit Saturn, turned Lord 8, bodily. When I cast the chart, the Moon was on Fomalhaut, in the Mouth of the Fish, and also conjunct the South Node by antiscion. I picked one person to whom to announce my findings: fell into water, death by drowning. And so, unfortunately, it was.

A Fake Book of Magic

A Real Book of Magic

The next workday topic was suggested by a former participant in other workdays: The Theory of Dark Magic.

"What an odd topic to suggest!" I thought. But as I thought further, the idea appealed to me, as it will allow me to touch on the Theory of Magic, in general, and why Dark Magic isn't such a thrilling option when you know how magic works. This will involve a bit of Cosmology, to start, and how events manifest in our lives.

And then other things occurred to me.

* What is, in fact, a curse?

* What other things besides curses constitute "dark magic?"

* Is a curse ever justified?

* Is there a karmic backlash to worry about?

* Can a curse boomerang back to the curser?

* Can a group be cursed, or only an individual?

* What --can-- one do when faced with a blood-thirsty tyrant or an invading army? Witch History and Lessons from 1588, 1805, and 1940. Invocations of the Heroes. The Last Resort: The Wand of Bone and Field of Blood.

* What if you cursed someone innocent by mistake?

* The Sin That Cannot Be Forgiven, The Stain that Won't Come Out: The Sin Against the Holy Ghost, aka the Offense Against the Mother's Womb

* The Old Prohibitions Against Cursing: Remember how a few years back it was popular to curse then-President Trump? I instantly lost respect for anyone who tried. And I was astonished at the number of initiated occultists and witches (and excluding the legions of fakes) who jumped on the bandwagon and who should have known better. Ditto for the idiots who tried to curse the Moon not soon after. There is an old list of about seven of these prohibitions. Know them, or conjure to your own destruction, I say.

* The Book of Ancient Curses (Hexopedia, Volume 1) . . . the beginning part contains something like a code of etiquette for cursing.

* Lots of Other Options: Protection, Justice, Blessing, Turn-Away Spells, Cross-Not-My-Path Spells.

* The Coven's Spell to Invoke the Goddess as Mother of Justice for All

* The Mythology of Desert Peoples, Demonic Mythology, Grimoire Demons, Dark Things Older than the Cross.

Sunday, November 19: 4-6 pm

Please remember that we are talking about the Theory of Dark Magic. We are not discussing methods of, or instruction in, practicing it. But, even if you are the most powerful and benevolent Witch in the world, you should know the basics, the mechanics, and your history.

*** Blessed be to those who serve the Great Mother and the Horned Father.

Cernunnos

Elen of the Ways

I commissioned a Ukranian craftsman to do a Cernunnos statue for me. He had one that he had done, already, but the face looked to bestial for my liking. I wanted to support him, so I asked if he would design another one with a more human face, and he did. And so I purchased the new Cernunnos, a Triple Goddess statue, and Earth Mother statue, and an Ancestors statue. I give things like this away as gifts, sometimes as initiation gifts. I hope this is a good chunk of cash for him.

He also produces a lovely Elen of the Ways statue (above). This is the patron goddess of the awenydd in the southwest of England . . . Dartmoor, Exmoor, Cornwall areas. -ydd is a plural suffix in modern Welsh, yes? Afon = river, Afonydd = rivers. But, in Old Brythonic, the suffix -ydd meant something like "agent of or dealer with", and that has survived into modern Welsh, too. So, cig = meat, cigydd = butcher, adar = birds, adarydd = ornithologist. So, awen = flowing spirit, awenydd = spirit worker.

Elen of the Ways could easily be assimilated to my bioregion in the Northeast United States. We have white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) here in abundance. I probably would not use the term "Elen," though, which was just a Brythonic version of Greek Helena, meaning "torch" or "shining bright." Here, the Elen statue carries a lantern to symbolize her brightness. Brythonic did have a word "elen" for "maiden," so maybe that is related, to

In my area, which is heavily influenced by First Nation names and spirits, we would probably call her Deer Mother or Grandmother Deer. Cows are also very important to my bioregion. Well, cows were important everywhere. A cow or aurochs was essentially the "Walmart" of ancient peoples -- you could get anything out of it -- meat, milk, clothes, leather, tools, sewing equipment, jewelry, and so on. It is why many alphabets begin with a letter signifying the Ox (Aleph, Alpha, Fehu), and why our A is an upside-down Cow's face.

If you would like to read about the way of the awenydd and Elen and her Ways, check out the books of Elen Sentier, a hereditary awenydd.

I have sometimes thought to myself that, if I ever became a Druid, I would have a capelet made from the pelt of a white deer or a white cow in honor of one of these ancient animals, who have given inestimable benefits to humankind.

I had this set of Druidic Beads made. You probably can't tell, but I had the number 137 built into the design. There is one bead for the Earth, one bead for the Sun, and also a couple of beads made from petrified wood. Then three sets of nine beads in different colors for the different grades of druidry. That's one set of colors at least. Some of the British Druids postulate that Bards wore a White Robe, Ovates wore a Red tabard over that white robe, and a Druid put a Black cloak over the red tabard and white robe.

Anyway, why 137? See this:

https://ronkowitz.medium.com/the-answer-to-life-the-universe-and-everything-is-137-maybe-d9fdc1fb596f#:~:text=In%20mysticism%2C%20the%20Hebrew%20word,sections%20of%20the%20Tabernacle's%20ceiling.

The Eighty One Triads of Universal Philosophy (studied by Druids . . . Ovates study Natural Philosophy) can be recited on the 27 beads, if one runs through the length three times. The Universal Druid Prayer is also 9 lines (if you count saying an Awen at the end).

Cartomancy

Oct. 6th, 2023 02:53 pm
I sometimes use this spread when I want the predictions to fall in chronological order. The first prediction for this Seeker was that a male family member (K of Clubs) would contact him to issue an invitation to a wedding (the Aces of Diamonds and Hearts flanking the K of Clubs). It would be a small wedding (no 8s present), to be followed by a dinner at night (A and 2 of Diamonds with 10 of Spades). That came to pass, as foretold, two days later, when he received a call from his younger brother: the younger brother would be getting married in November in a small Saturday afternoon wedding, to be followed by dinner.

The clock of fate will tick around through the predictions, until the last one, which will be a cancelled flight that will not get rebooked. They will all come true.

After that happens, the Seeker can come for another reading.

I do not share these things to brag, but to share with others what can be done. I hope it builds your confidence.

Oracle Cards are not a new phenomenon. The French seemed to be fond of them in the 19th century. There is the famous Oracle Belline. And then there is this one, the Oracle Planetaire, which also sometimes went by the name Sorcier Tarots Parisiens, published in 1867.

Some Cards of Jupiter

Other Planets Under the Cut )

The virtue of the old French Oracle decks is that they were based on the planets, and thus, built into them was the cosmological reality of the universe. And when you have a deck that mirrors cosmological reality, you can actually trust it to provide you accurate answers and forecasts that conform to reality. A deck of playing cards is another mirror of the universe. Tarot decks in the Marseille tradition are similar.

Vegetable Soup

It is likely that, before a Witch teaches you herbalism, she will talk about nutrition. It has long been known by the Wise and traditional medicine practitioners that daily food can be our daily medicine, too. One thing that people seem to have difficulty with is getting enough vegetables every day. Women tend to do better at that than men, I have noticed. In any event, a good solution to the issue is a vegetable soup, made in the simple style of old crone cookery. This is actually a very common soup made throughout France, and thousands and thousands of people---adults and children---eat some almost every day as part of supper. It couldn't be easier.

It is usually made with a peeled POTATO, a peeled TURNIP, a trimmed and cleaned LEEK, two peeled CARROTS, and two stalks of CELERY.* Dice everything into a rough chunk of the same size. Put it in a pot. Add water to cover, plus a bit, and then put it on stove and simmer, covered, until the vegetables are soft. When it is done, let it cool a bit, and then blend** it in batches in a blender, mixing all the blended soup together in another big bowl or pot. Now you can add SALT, PEPPER, a pinch of CAYENNE, some stripped leaves of THYME, CURRY powder, or whatever you like. You can freeze some of the soup, and put the rest in the refrigerator. Eat 12-16 oz. of it to start dinner, or with some buttered bread, and a nice piece of cheese or sausage, it could BE dinner. Sometimes the French will stir in a bit of cream or creme fraiche, or add a piece of soft cheese to melt into the soup.

This soup is packed with nutrition. You are using the water in which the vegetables have boiled as the base for the soup. You have cooked it long enough that the cell walls of the vegetables have been broken down, giving maximum acceess to vitamins and minerals. You can add and subtract vegetables as you like. Perhaps an onion instead of a leek. Or add a hot pepper, an eggplant, some chopped kale or dandelion greens or collards, a clove or two of garlic. It is a blank canvas for your experimentation and delight. Like a thinner soup? Add more water. Thicker? Add less.

* And if you like old crone cookery, you'll be saving and freezing those vegetable trimmings and scraps for when you have some bones and want to make a meat stock.

** Or use a hand blender right in the pot. Or, if you are very old school, strong, and patient, a potato masher.

This is a chart that an apprentice astrologer asked me to look at for a second opinion.

FACTS: The Querent is a woman. She was married recently, but the husband now wants a divorce. They no longer live together and the divorce is scheduled to take place next month. Q is working on some projects with a male colleague in her field, although they live in different cities. Q thinks that she and the male colleague both have feelings for one another, and she wants to know whether this will turn into a romantic relationship? Unfortunately, it is not known whether MC is currently in a relationship.

The Querent (Q) is Lord 1, Mars in Libra, and the Moon in Leo.

The Male Colleague (MC) is Lord 7, Venus in Leo, and the Sun in Virgo.

When I first read the facts, I thought it could be possible that Lord 7 could be the ex-husband, and that we would have to find another significator for MC, but from the receptions, I think the apprentice was quite right to give Lord 7 and the Sun to MC. The receptions also make it clear that the Ex-Husband (XH) is Saturn.

Q as Mars in detriment is feeling down on herself, but is very keen on MC as Venus by rulership and term. It is a bit unfortunate to see that Mars is in the other Venus-ruled sign, and not the sign on the 7th house cusp. That usually indicates that Q's feelings for the other person are not real, but masked by the fact that she is feeling sad or depressed, and so she thinks this other person in her environment is going to cheer her up, rather like a beneficial distraction or a rebound relationship. Mars also carries the Sun into fall, so her head is disappointed in men in general. Mars is exalting Saturn, the XH, but this is a very common thing to see at the end of a relationship. It doesn't mean she is holding up the XH on a pedestal, but that she is daydreaming about "what could have been" -- oh, this could have been a great relationship XH, if you were other than you are. But, Mars carrying Saturn into triplicity means she is not bitter toward him as a person.

Notably, Mars is on the fixed star Vindemiatrix, the Widow Maker. So, that naturally signifies the divorce process. Mars has yet to perfect the conjunction with the star, so it is not a helpful testimony at all, for a future relationship with MC, either.

Q as the Moon is very much infatuated with MC as the Sun. And the Moon also carries Saturn into detriment: her heart/emotions are very much disappointed in the XH. We also see that the antiscion of the Moon is just past the conjunction of Uranus on the 7th house cusp. That was the scheduling of the divorce that recently occurred.

So, both of her significators have contacts indicating the divorce from the XH, as we would expect.

The Part of Marriage/Relationship in this chart is at 8 Virgo 2, with Mercury as the dispositor. So, Mercury could represent the role of a potential relationship with MC.

MC's Venus is in strong dignities of the Sun, and the Sun is in strong dignities of Mercury. MC thinks highly of himself in many ways, and he would like a relationship, but he also values his own manly freedom. Mercury is under the sunbeams in its own sign, so if MC is already in another relationship, I would take Mercury as being his partner. That would make sense of the Sun's strong Mercury dignities. Unfortunately, we don't have enough facts to clear that up.

What is abundantly clear, though, is that both of MC's significators are completely indifferent to Q's significators. Even if he were in the market for a relationship, it would not be with Q.

We do have an aspect here, though. Q's Moon is going to sextile Mars and then conjunct Venus. This signifies an OPPORTUNITY for a relationship to develop. But, inasmuch as MC is completely uninterested in Q's significators, there will be NO MOTIVATION or NO INCLINATION on his part to start a romantic relationship.

After that lunar aspect the Sun is going to oppose the antiscion of Mars. Even if MC gives some kind of informal or sexual relationship a shot, he is going to regret it.

Then the antiscion of Venus is going to apply to conjunct Jupiter, which is MC's turned Lord 10. After the above, he will call off the work projects.

Judgment to the question: No.

Coven Rochester will be holding another workday on September 24, 4 to 6 pm. The topic with will be protection magic and spells, mostly traditional in origin. We will cover general daily protection methods/techniques/practices first. The spells will cover a wide spectrum such as protection on a journey, protecting a garden from pests, protecting an object from theft, as well as the usual home protection magics like Witch Bottles. There will be some older spells mixed in, such as a home protection spell from colonial times and a method for making a personal protective amulet from a 19th century witch's workbook. There will also be a discussion of the old witch jewels and amulets. We will not be covering breaking or reversing curses. Participants need not bring anything. There will be a bunch of handouts.

Now that I have a Moon Clock in my office at work, I have found that I would really like one at home, as well. This is from the same maker, but a different style. Having a Moon Clock around is very helpful in planning what is coming up in my Witch's Diary. I am in a Moon of the Past right now, in a week of written memories. I have spent most of the week detailing magical and psychic things I have accomplished.

Making Stomach Syrup

We have been out of stomach syrup for a while, so I made a batch when I happened to see bunches of fresh Mint (Mentha spp.) at the grocery store. The other plant ingredients are 1 cup of finely chopped Ginger (Zingiber officinale), and 2 Tablespoons of ground Fennel Seed (Foeniculum vulgare). I steeped the ingredients overnight in a quart jar, using water just off the boil. Then I strained them out. I heated the resulting potion slightly on the stove and stirred in 2 cups of organic honey until just melted in. When it was slightly cooled, I added 3-4 Tablespoons of Brandy as a preservative. Bottled. Labelled. Refrigerated. It made quite a bit, so I made a small bottle to give away, as well. It will last in the refrigerator 4-6 months. 1-2 Tablespoons is the dosage, for anything gastric related.

The Dream Interpretation Workday on Sunday evening was successful, with everyone being able to interpret his or her dream and have an "aha!" moment.

I also had a spur-of-the-moment request to remove a Saturnian-type spirit from a young woman. It was a busy day and I initially thought I might not have time to do it. But then, my internal priesthood asserted itself in my mind, and I found time. The process--talking, cleansing, potion drinking---took under an hour, and the young lady had immediate relief. We had a Seer observe the process and she saw the spirit depart, in much anger and much pain. To which I responded, "Too f***ing bad." I have been mildly chastised in the past by my betters for such an attitude. But I have pointed out in my defense that when one is ridding a sufferer of say, giardiasis or a head lice infestation, no one is wringing their hands and clutching their pearls over the death of the parasites. And, in my defense here, we let the spirit live, when we could have killed it.

Goodness, I must be feeling defensive this morning. I must explore that. :D

We sold a piece of property. Weeks ago, when the property was first listed on the market and before anyone had looked at it, I was in the midst of a week of predictive work. I announced to the household that I thought the purchasers would be a couple, and one of them would be a doctor. And so it proved. Yesterday, an OB/GYN and her husband outbid everyone else.

After the prediction came true, I briefly recalled to mind a statement of the Witch of Coos. After the Son tells the Visitor what the Mother can do:

SON: Mother can make a common table rear
And kick with two legs like an army mule.

MOTHER: And when I’ve done it, what good have I
done?

I suppose I gave others in the household some comfort that the property would sell. I also named the price above which it would sell. So, perhaps I did do some good with it.

Гимн пифагорейцев восходящему солнцу

This is a lovely painting by Fyodor Bronnikov, and it hangs in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. I have given the title in Russian, above. In English, it is "The Hymn of the Pythagoreans to the Rising Sun." I have always loved this painting. It reminded me of being trained by a Druidess, when young, to Chant to the Four Corners of the Day. By the way, "Druid" is the proper ancient term for both a female and male Druid. Druidess was not used until the 18th century or so. Still, I like it. "Druid Priestess" would do just as well. Anyway, I may have this painting reproduced on canvas in years to come.

Toad Purse

Aug. 16th, 2023 11:10 am

If anyone asks you if it is possible to purchase a purse, say seven inches by four inches, made of leather from the Bufo marinus, the answer is yes.

The Cane Toad has become an invasive and destructive species in several parts of the world. In an attempt to turn a negative into a positive, some have begun humanely (if this is applicable in this context at all) capturing and killing them to turn them into leather goods.

A Bone Casting with a Full Set. Answering a real question.

A Closer View of the same reading.

This set of Reading Bones contains 23 items.

1, QUARTZ CRYSTAL, to represent the Seeker.

2-8, BONES: a straight bone, a curved bone, a broken bone, a good tooth, a bad tooth, a talus, a claw

9-10, TWO DICE. The numbers 1-6 have different meanings.

11, AN ACORN: Beginning, progress, growth.

12, A SKULL: Ending, stagnation, delay. This could be a skull carved out of a stone.

13, A KEY: To show a solution to a problem, but could also indicate an open or closed door.

14-23: SIGNIFICATORS

14: For LOVE, DESIRE, SENSUALITY: I use a SHELL.

15: For HOME OR FAMILY: I use a ROSE QUARTZ chunk.

16: For WORK OR EFFORT: I use a chunk of dark green BLOODSTONE.

17: For HEALTH: I use an oval piece of LIGHT GREEN AGATE (not pictured . . . it was way off in the north east).

18: For a WISH/GOAL: I use a striped WISHING STONE.

19: For MONEY: I use an OLD COIN.

20: For SPIRIT or RELIGION: I use an 1-0 domino carved from a bone. Sometimes this falls upward (the Divine Eye looking at you!) and sometimes face down.

21: For TRAVEL, JOURNEY, MOVEMENT: I use a circlet of DEER ANTLER.

22: A BUTTON: face up meaning open, yes, honest, revealed, speaking. face down, meaning closed, no, deception, secret, silent.

23: A STONE HEART: to represent another person who might be involved in the question.

The only thing I did not have when I put this set together was a CLAW. I used a COYOTE TOOTH as a temporary substitute. But, today I ordered a 1.5 inch BEAR CLAW from MOSCOW HIDE AND FUR (MOSCOW, IDAHO). They are lovely and efficient people.

There is a trick to reading bones, and someone will teach it to you by word of mouth.

It is a very easy method for answering specific questions. The above reading is for such a question. The Seeker asked: "Should I seek the help of my friend XYZ?" The spirits answered (for it is through the bones that the spirits speak, as all shamans and sangomas have always agreed): XYZ is your most direct and fastest solution, but there is another woman, further off, whose assistance you should seek first. That other woman is older, and of inestimable worth to your cause. You will have to travel to meet her. Do you know who she is?" And the Seeker did.

More difficult are general questions. When a Seeker comes and has no particular question in mind. You must be able to throw the bones and tell future events. They can be general, but your statements must be events, capable of being right or wrong. "You daughter will be pregnant in six months", "you will get a speeding ticket next month," "your boss at work is leaving for another job soon," etc. are all events. "You are entering a period of financial difficulty" is not an event. Moreover, it is too general if you cannot tell the Seeker what will occasion the financial difficulty (medical costs, loss of job, car failure, and so on). You may see only the generalities in the cast of the bones, but the spirits will supply the details. If you cannot hear the spirits, then your teacher has not helped you sufficiently to rend the veil from that part of your mind.

"Social Security"
by Terence Winch

No one is safe. The streets are unsafe.
Even in the safety zones, it's not safe.
Even safe sex is not safe.
Even things you lock in a safe
are not safe. Never deposit anything
in a safety deposit box, because it
won't be safe there. Nobody is safe
at home during baseball games anymore.

At night I go around in the dark
locking everything, returning
a few minutes later
to make sure I locked
everything. It's not safe here.
It's not safe and they know it.
People get hurt using safety pins.

It was not always this way.
Long ago, everyone felt safe. Aristotle
never felt danger. Herodotus felt danger
only when Xerxes was around. Young women
were afraid of wingéd dragons, but felt
relaxed otherwise. Timotheus, however,
was terrified of storms until he played
one on the flute. After that, everyone
was more afraid of him than of the violent
west wind, which was fine with Timotheus.
Euclid, full of music himself, believed only
that there was safety in numbers.

-----------------------------------------------

Delandra Elana was a musician, too, so I imagine she stood firmly with Euclid on this point. I do, too.

Craftspeople are getting so creative. This is a Witch's Clock. The top dial shows the movements of the Sun, by the 12-hour clock. The bottom dial keeps track of the phases of the Moon. The Moon Clock has become very handy for me, of late, inasmuch as I keep a Witch's Diary according to the Moon. In two days, when the Moon turns New, I will be writing remembrances of the feats of magic and clairvoyance that have come through me.
Runs on two AA batteries, one for each dial.
