Sarah was a . . . well, she was not of the Wicca, so we could not really call her a Witch. She was not terribly religious, either, so one could not call her a Pagan. Sybil Leek would have called her a spellcaster (see Sybil's book CAST YOUR OWN SPELL). A sorceress would be a good term, too, I think. In any event, living in New York in her early 20s, Sarah discovered that she had the gift of magic, and her gift was sufficiently strong that it occasionally ripened into the power to affect physical matter. When someone else wanted to see if she, too, had sufficient will and concentration to exercise the gift of magic, Sarah would give her this spell. If the person could not make this simple spell work, it was unlikely she would have the focus to make any more difficult spell work.

The incantation for the Kiss Me Spell feels a bit off kilter. Intentionally so. This was part of Sarah's genius. Her incantations can catch the mind unawares, and that allows the spellcaster to get her own chattering mind briefly out of the way. It's a purposeful mental hiccough. Practice it. You'll get the right rhythm for you, and you will see what I mean.

One of the simple spells of summoning can similarly be used as a test of minimum magical skill: to bring a person to a location where you plan to be so that you can meet face-to-face.

Now, if you are a skilled spellcaster, or an initiated Witch, it is unlikely that you are going to use your power for very long to get people to air-kiss you everywhere you go, but the skills here can be useful to you later on, too. An example:

I once received a telephone call from a friend who told me that, in two days' time, she was having a job interview at a big law firm in New York City, and could I help her with a spell? Don't you just love it when people give you *ONE SINGLE DAY* to work magic for them? I told her I would help her, but that she would have to send me, by overnight shipping, a couple of things -- a piece of her hair, and a piece of letterhead from the law firm. I had the other two ingredients -- a green cloth and a wooden box. Her FedEx envelope duly arrived the next day, and I called to tell her so. Before we got off the phone, she said, "Wait! How will I know if the spell has taken effect?" I thought a minute and replied: "After the interview, when things are winding down, I will make him mention boats or the ocean. How about that?" "Boats or the ocean?" "Yes, boats or the ocean." This is really nothing more than a specific adaptation of the skill involved in The Kiss Me Spell.

The interview was the next day. At the end of it, the interviewer wished her a good weekend. and he volunteered that, since the weather was going to be so fine, he and his family were going boating at their vacation home in the Hamptons. The following Monday, my friend received her job offer.
